Sustainability Connect facilitates both academic and non-academic experiential opportunities:

Courses where a faculty member and community partner co-advise students to address a sustainability challenge as the class project. Students work in diverse teams, including graduate and undergraduate students, and self-direct the project. In order to develop pathways to sustainability outcomes, they draw on previous course content and methods and engage with faculty and project partners as well as stakeholders to ensure those pathways are feasible, state-of-the-art, and have community buy-in. All graduate and undergraduate students are required to take at least one workshop class. Use the ASU course catalog to register for current workshop offerings.

Applied Projects


Professional, experiential projects for graduate students, typically in a transdisciplinary setting, where students, faculty, and partners produce knowledge together. This involves regular interactions between student consultants and project partners and offers a platform to sharpen project development and management skills. Students will report to an academic supervisor and/or supervisory committee. Students will actively contribute to actionable pathways to sustainability outcomes with the partner.

Professional, experiential research for undergraduate and graduate students in a transdisciplinary setting where students, faculty, and project partners produce knowledge together. Researchers will work with a dedicated onsite project partner under the supervision of an academic supervisor and committee at ASU. Students can expect to sharpen their project development and management skills while potentially publishing a paper detailing actionable solutions and other practical deliverables.

Planned learning experiences that allow students to take the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom and apply them in a professional work setting. These are temporary positions for both undergraduate and graduate students with emphasis on professional job training while reporting to a dedicated, onsite supervisor for 135 hours minimum. Students should have intentional personal and career-related learning goals. They can expect to gain real-world, hands-on experience prior to entering the job market while expanding their professional network and future opportunities. Additionally, students engage in academic coursework that encourages critical reflection on the internship experience.

Service Learning


Unpaid volunteer opportunities for informal applied learning experience with a dedicated onsite project partner that is not bound to an academic term. Volunteers will not receive academic credit but rather a certificate for community service. Students can expect to gain real-world, hands-on experience prior to entering the job market while expanding their professional network and future opportunities.

Education and Public Outreach


Collaborate with local K-12 schools and community partners to provide learning experiences and implement hands-on projects. Through these opportunities undergraduate and graduate students develop skills in stakeholder engagement, lesson development and effective presentation, and science communication. Students will contribute to sustainability knowledge development in the community and hone practical project skills by working with partners to teach relevant sustainability materials and/or develop a sustainability project that is site-specific and connected to classroom curriculum. This education and public outreach combines a variety of Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability’s K-12 initiatives, in particular, S4 (Sustainability Science for Sustainable Schools), Ecology Explorers, and professional development for teachers.
