Through hands-on learning experiences, students learn about sustainability practices and challenges by working in the field with professionals from the community and the university. In these experiential settings, students can sharpen their understanding of classroom concepts and how they lend themselves for applied problem solving and actual change, while simultaneously starting to develop their professional skills in a professional setting. Such university-practice collaboration widens students’ perspectives and challenges them to explore new ways of knowing and producing knowledge. Classroom components to the project foster academic discussion with peers and professors to help students discover the significance of their projects in a broader picture. All projects in Sustainability Connect pose a unique opportunity to explore the world of sustainability careers. While students can use these projects to start networking and inquiring with their project partners about how they can realize their ideal careers, project partners get to know the new generation of sustainability experts first-hand.
